Jenny O. is from Los Angeles and I've read that her music reflects California's 'roots of sunshine and slow-paced atmosphere' and after listening to all her tracks on 'SoundCloud' I felt quite spaced out. You can watch the video for this track here. 'Well, OK Honey' is the first track from her 2010 self released 'Home EP'. I discovered her music whilst working on my gig guide and saw that Birmingham Promoters had booked her for a show at the Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath, tomorrow night and looked her up out of curiosity, liked what I heard and then went on a mini-mission to find this download to share with you. Her voice and songs remind me of a cheery upbeat Alessi's Ark. Have a listen and if you're in the area tomorrow, there's far worse ways to spend a Tuesday evening then going to see her.

Here's a lovely bit of indie pop from Seattle's own Seapony. The band is Jen Weidl (vocals and guitar), Danny Rowland (guitar), & Ian Brewer (bass). Their first release was the 3-song 'Dreaming' single followed by their debut album, Go With Me which puts Jen Weidl's youthful melancholia and yearning on display and wraps it in a blanket of twee/surf/jangle pop. Whilst doing a bit of research for this piece I read that: 'Most songs on Go With Me use no more than three chords, with an average running time of around two-and-a-half minutes. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts time-keeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to 'Dreaming', the track that catapulted them into the spotlight, are just six lines long.' Signed to the mighty Sub Pop offshoot label Hardly Art, this is track 3 from their forthcoming second album 'Falling' which is set for release on 11th September, why not get ahead on things and add this to your collection now. I'd recommend this for fans of 'The Scool', 'Girls Names', 'Blouse', 'Beach Fossils', 'Widowspeak', and 'Le Sera' plus the brilliantly named 'Kids on a Crime Spree'. You'll want to go to the SoundCloud page itself to see the download link. This is a track from Kate Nash that was written and recorded in less than 24 hours. She's put it up as a free download whilst she's on tour. The video can be seen here. It's resulted in a polarized opinion from her fanbase, the official video on YouTube has 1,422 likes and 1,381 dislikes. Many liken it to the music to Riot Grrrl groups such as Bikini Kill and Le Tigre with a big lump of Hole thrown in. Have a listen and see what you make of it all. On her tumblr My Ignorant Youth, Kate has said that she'll leave this up as a free download whilst she's away on her current tour, so if you do like what you hear, get to it. Vivian Girls are a popular noise pop/indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York. I think there's a good chance you'll recognise the track once you hear it so give a try. I'll confess that I don't know a huge amount about the band other than a familiarity with their music, but I do know that they have supported Sonic Youth and I'd read that their second drummer, Ali Koehler, left to join Best Coast as a tour drummer. Anyways, enjoy the track. Alphabet Backwards are a joyous indie pop band that I met at the Wychwood festival when I helped load them in to the BBC Introducing stage, but then missed their set as I was working. Fourtunetly I was also at the Cornbury festival and managed to see them there. They're an awesome band from Oxford and here we have a fun little track called 'Plastic' that you can get your mits on for free. If you ever see this band's name of a festival linee up that you're going to, trust me, you are in for a treat! I don't want to just come out with the usual 'The half Greek, half Welsh singer/songwriter rose to success...' stuff that you could read on any blog and no doubt already know. But c'mon man, Marina Lambrini Diamandis - what a ridiculously cool name.
Then click here for the song. It should be pretty obvious where to look but if not, see where it says 'Tracklist'...yep, that's it. Free download? Oh yes please. Marina, Marina, Marina, can she do no wrong? To get your grubby mits on an acoustic version of Radioactive, all you have to do is go to her official website and it'll be right there on the splash screen. Either that or just pop your email in the box below and click 'Submit' and if you get signed up to a mailing list, you can always just unsubscribe when the first email comes through. It's not that difficult, it really isn't, so stop um'ing and er'ing and biting your lip and just get on with it. Rome wasn't built in a day and you're not building a city, you're not even playing the mighty Age of Empires II, you're just sat there looking for free music and now you've found it. Do believe the hype. Lana (or Elizabeth Grant) is a singer/songwriter from Lake Placid, New York, United States. She is known for embellishing her songs and music videos with an eerily nostalgic vibe heavy on Americana themes, including images of surfing, Coney Island, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe. Here's a track that she did for a session with 6Music recently. |
Making your music folder better, one song at a time.
_Pretty much everyday I seem to find some amazing exclusive tracks that
some awesome artists are giving away for free as a special one off
promotion. Today, it occured to me that instead of just downloading
them, maybe reposting them on facebook if they're special enough/someone I know and
then moving on, I should start a little music blog on here. Even if it
doesn't last forever, it's still a free song for you each day that it
does! I'd say the character of this blog is mostly electropop and singer/songwriter but I've got plans for mathcore, post-rock and glitch-hop. A lot of these tracks have a download limit of 100 so get in there on the quick. I'd also point out that a lot of the songs will need renaming once you've downloaded them so I'd do them one at a time. Archives
